چکیده

In order to improve the boundary mesh quality while maintaining the essential characteristics of discrete surfaces, a new approach combining optimization-based smoothing and topology optimization is developed. The smoothing objective function is modified, in which two functions denoting boundary and interior quality, respectively, and aweight coefficient controlling boundary quality are taken into account. In addition, the existing smoothing algorithm can improve the mesh quality only by repositioning vertices of the interior mesh. Without destroying boundary conformity, bad elements with all their vertices on the boundary cannot be eliminated. Then, topology optimization is employed, and those elements are converted into other types of elements whose quality can be improved by smoothing. The practical application shows that the worst elements can be eliminated and, with the increase of weight coefficient, the average quality of boundarymesh can also be improved. Results obtainedwith the combined approach are compared with some common approach. It is clearly shown that it performs better than the existing approach.

Quality Improvement of 3D Meshes in ALE simulation of Gas Dynamics

An important part of the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method is the rezoning or mesh improvement step after completion of the Lagrangian step where the mesh is deformed according to the flow. A procedure is presented here to optimize the quality of elements in 3D solid meshes by node repositioning. The procedure aims to improve the quality of boundary mesh faces and interior mesh regions while...

A Log-Barrier Method for Mesh Quality Improvement

The presence of a few poor-quality mesh elements can negatively affect the stability and efficiency of a finite element solver and the accuracy of the associated partial differential equation solution. We propose a mesh quality improvement method that improves the quality of the worst elements. Mesh quality improvement of the worst elements can be formulated as a nonsmooth unconstrained optimiz...

A Guaranteed Quality Boundary Graded Triangular Meshing Algorithm Backed by a Computer-Assisted Proof

The quality of mesh elements including shape and size influences the performance of finite elements analysis, interpolation, and contouring. The existence of small angles is especially critical for conditioning of the stiffness matrix in finite elements methods. In this paper we present a boundary graded triangular mesh generation algorithm that allows for guaranteed bounds on angles. Our proof...
